After moving to Las Vegas, I made an appointment to see Dr. Phoenix to check my labwork and provide refills for HRT. I have been on the same dose of estrogen, spiro, and progesterone for nearly three years and have never had any issues with bloodwork in the past. After checking my levels, Dr. Phoenix sent me an email demanding that I completely stop taking my estrogen for one month because the levels were too high according to his own biased opinion. I have since researched this information and learned that the levels shown on my test were well within the safe and acceptable range for sublingual dosing.

I have since discussed this with several other trans women who have experienced a spike in serum estrogen levels soon after taking their sublingual dose. When I wrote back to Dr. Phoenix to discuss this information, he was condescending and rude and refused to work with me in order to taper my dose down to an acceptable level (according to him), and obstinately refused to consider the fact that serum estrogen levels spike and give an incorrect reading soon after taking the sublingual dose. I have never encountered this sort of gatekeeping with other providers, and for a provider to demand me to completely stop taking my medication abruptly is ludicrous, reckless, and foolhardy. I work in suicide prevention and am well aware that stopping HRT medication abruptly WILL cause severe mood swings, hot flashes. nausea, lack of energy and severe gender dissonance (up to and including suicidal ideations). What part of this is therapeutic?

Dr. Phoenix is clearly out of touch with the trans community as well as best practices for care of any trans patient. If you value your transition and want a provider who actually listens and will consider objective facts, STAY AWAY from the Huntridge Clinic. You have been warned!
