I offer psychotherapy and substance abuse counseling from a strengths-based, anti-oppression framework. My deepest expertise is in working with LGBTQ+ clients and with trans, genderqueer, and gnc clients in particular. As a trans/genderqueer person myself, I know how hard it can be to find an affirming, knowledgeable, and non-patronizing therapist.

Many of my clients come to me after having unhelpful experiences with past therapists who didn't seem to "get" them or who seemed to have agendas of their own. Fit is important. If I don't seem to be the right therapist for you, I will do my best to connect you to someone who might be. You absolutely never need to settle when it comes to your mental health and well-being.

Aren Drehobl is by far the finest and most effective therapist I have ever worked with. Aren is friendly, kind, professional, and possesses an uncanny ability, through plain, non-intrusive discussion, to draw out the details of a person’s experience necessary to understand and address the issues underlying that person’s concerns, and then develop practical strategies to meet those concerns head-on.

I was introduced to Aren through Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago when I went there seeking crisis intervention. I am a trans woman. I had been under-employed since my transition and at the time was enduring a twenty-month period of unemployment. I was ready to give up--I was actively planning my suicide. From my first session with Aren, it was clear I was working with someone who listened, who understood, and who could help me develop a plan for action. I visited Aren on a weekly basis over three months, and during that time I went from being suicidal to being hopeful for my future. While I cannot credit Aren with causing the events that eventually led to my finding a job, Aren did help me find the will to continue living through this dark time. I credit Aren with saving my life. I am not suggesting Aren can or will solve all of a person’s problems, but those problems *will* be made manageable. I have no reservation in recommending Aren as a counselor. I am confident anyone working with Aren will make progress toward their goal, and will likely achieve it.
