Maximilian E. Fuentes Fuhrmann, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive practical experience in the assessment and psychotherapeutic treatment of older adults. He received his Ph.D. from the renowned clinical-aging psychology program at USC in 1988. He now is a clinical supervisor for students in this program. In private practice since 1990, he primarily provides screenings for depression and anxiety in the elderly and assesses memory and cognitive functioning. Since 2004, he has provided trainings for individuals working for Los Angeles County Youth and Family Services at the USC Center on Child Welfare as part time adjunct faculty through USC School of Social Work. Additionally, he taught gerontology and psychology courses at California State University Northridge (CSUN) for 18 years. He has also taught at the California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) and at California Lutheran University (CLU) in Thousand Oaks. Dr. Fuhrmann has administrative experience in helping to initiate inpatient geriatric psychiatric programs at Pacific Shores Hospital in Oxnard and Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks. In 1996, he became the second psychologist in California to be elected President of a Medical staff. In 2006, he co-authored, with Jeff Shevlowitz, Sagacity: What I Learned from My Elderly Psychotherapy Clients. Continuing education credits are available for this work. He is currently working on a book concerning how adult children struggle to care for their aging parents and relatives. Additionally, Dr. Fuhrmann has provided over 150 mandatory trainings in gerontological issues to licensed psychotherapists and graduate students. He recently became a certified trainer through the National Resource Center in providing education to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and senior care provider organizations about LGBT aging issues. He also co-facilitates a senior gay men's support group at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center and hopes to develop more outreach to trans elders through their senior services program.
