The Trans Buddy Program

Categories:   Advocacy

The Trans Buddy Program’s goal is to increase access to care and improve healthcare outcomes for transgender people by providing emotional support to transgender patients during healthcare visits. We emphasize a patient-centered approach, with the goal of empowering the patient to make informed healthcare decisions. Trans Buddy recognizes the importance of intersectionality to our direct care practice, and we therefore aim to work with people of all identities with compassion and respect. We provide transgender people seeking care with support services for:

1) Scheduled primary care or clinic appointments;

2) Emergent care on an on-call basis; and,

3) Transition-related care, including a) cross gender hormone therapy visits and b) gender-confirming surgical procedure appointments and aftercare.

Our peer advocates work to improve communication between patients, providers, and staff. This often means advocating for our clients when EMR and forms do not provide options that adequately describe how they identify and what their healthcare needs are. We offer services to youth. The majority of our clients are trans youth receiving inpatient psychiatry services following self harm. We only require consent of the client. We do like to communicate with parents if the client permits us and often attend family therapy sessions as an advocate for our youth clients (always with their permission).

You can request in-person support for any appointment or inpatient care in the Nashville area. We are partnered with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but we frequently refer people to other clinics in the area. There is no charge for our services!
